The story of Neel Saree House

Sarees that are passed on with love

A house built one saree, one weaver and one patron at a time.

◆

Neel Saree House began with a simple wish — to offer women something we could truly stand behind.

At first, we imagined a store with everything under one roof. Then we chose one thing we felt deeply connected to, and let that connection grow. We chose the saree. We wear western clothes for comfort, and yet for every festival, every family occasion, in happiness and in grief, for gifting and even for work, we reach for a saree. It earns respect wherever it is worn — and it carries a bond between the woman who wears it and the one she hands it down to.

More than a store

We grew together

Neel Saree House started with its founder, Smitha — and it quickly became something more than one person. It gave her strength, an identity of her own, and the respect that comes from building something honestly.

Day by day, Neel Saree House and its founder grew stronger together. We learnt, we applied what we learnt, and we waited patiently for the right weaves and the right people — and we still do. Through all of it, one thing has not changed: we give our very best to every patron.

That is why, whenever we speak about Neel Saree House, we never say "I". We say we.

“Every saree is chosen as if it were going into our own family’s cupboard.”

How we choose

From the loom to you

01

At the loom

We travel to meet our weavers in person. After that first visit, the relationship continues — we stay in touch over WhatsApp for every saree that follows.

02

The fire test

We check every fabric with our own hands, and test silk with a fire test before it is chosen.

03

The zari test

Where a weaver is not yet registered for Silk Mark certification, we test the silk ourselves and keep the saree aside for a few days, to be certain the zari does not darken.

04

Checked & packed

Each saree is inspected once more before it leaves us. Every pure silk saree travels in its own premium cotton pouch — one saree to a bag.

Where our sarees come from

Close to the weavers

We visit weaving clusters ourselves, and work with trusted partners where the journey is too far. Buying this way means the weaver is paid fairly for the craft, and you pay an honest price for what you receive.

The details we check

01The borderWhere the zari is densest, and where a weaver's hand shows first.
02The palluHeld up to the light, a pure silk pallu falls in soft, heavy folds.
03The weaveThe body of the saree — its texture, buttis and fall tell you everything.
The hands behind us

Built with family

Neel Saree House has never been a one-person journey. Our families have stood behind us at every step.

Smitha’s sister-in-law travelled a long way just to stand by us, setting aside her own business to be there. What we have earned from Neel Saree House goes far beyond the money: it is the trust of our patrons, the respect of our weavers, and the support of the people closest to us.

Our promise

What you can count on

Honestly labelled

Pure is pure. When a saree is blended, we always say so — clearly, on every product.

Fair to weavers

Buying from weavers and trusted partners means fair value for their craft.

Chosen with care

Every saree is personally selected, checked, and packed with care before it reaches you.

Caring for your heirloom
  • Store silk folded in a soft cotton or muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
  • Refold every few months to protect the zari.
  • Silk sarees: dry clean only.
  • All other sarees: dry clean for the first few washes, then gentle hand wash in cold water, separately.
  • Avoid spraying perfume directly on silk.
